The MPLS architecture has been the IP data transport reference to provide multi-service enabled network for over 20 years, but this design is no longer consistent to accommodate the needs of the modern IP network.
With the introduction of new technology trends such as 5G, IoT, cloud services and so on, Service providers require a high level of flexibility, elasticity and scalability in their network infrastructure. These requirements are meet with the introduction on new SDN paradigm, control and data plane programmability, but despite over 2 decades of evolution and improvements, the MPLS protocol was not born with this in mind, it is still a reliable transport service, but could not be able to address the various challenges encountered by the Service Providers to provide next generation services and accommodate the fast paced market demands.
Few years ago the Segment Routing architecture has been proposed to satisfy the lack of the MPLS and in few time it has became the new reference architecture for IP data transport.
So, let’s go to take a look to the news introduced by the Segment Routing, how it works and specially how it can deal with the current MPLS infrastructure.
